In the last 12 months, there has been a large increase in the number of rogue tree surgeons and tree surgery scams operating in the UK.

Many these scams and rogue operators have been targeting the elderly, thinking they will be bullied or tricked much more easily.

Many of these scams start off as normal interactions with a supposed ‘reputable’ company. The client will be quoted for whatever service they need, usually tree removal and will feel like they are getting a reasonable deal. However, once the job is completed the trader will then ramp up the price. Usually trying to charge to have the tree taken away.

These rogue companies and scammers operate by delivering flyers to people’s doors or simply knocking and talking to the homeowner. Please make sure if you are interested in hiring one of these companies that you do your research first. Look at their website or give them a call. Ask to see specific certification that they are genuine and can operate legally. If they refuse to do so then go with another company.

When hiring, any trader ensure that you agree on a fixed price before the job is undertaken, do not allow for these rogue tree surgeons to try and wriggle more money out of you. This type of scam is beginning to happen occur much more frequently in Oxfordshire which is very worrying. Make sure you are aware of who you are dealing with and that everything is above board. Please also alert your elderly relatives as these are who they like to target the most.
